There is very little that can be said about “CJ” Allan that has not been said already. A quick history of the man begins at the beginning of the “biker” world. He was one of the pioneers of the life we all share, and THE originator of the Motorcycle and Hot Rod style of engraving that is often copied these days.

He has been featured in the motorcycle press, once again, from the beginning. From Ed Roths’ “Choppers”, through “Supercycle”, “Easyriders”, “Iron Horse”, and “The Horse Back Street Choppers”, and numerous others, etc… “CJ” has been in them all.

Now let’s deal with the modern version of “CJ”. He is a little larger (ha) and a little crankier (HA!), and winding down his engraving career. Some of the current professional show bike work that he has done includes: Billy Lanes’ Camel Roadhouse Tour bike, Indian Larrys’ last, and arguably finest build, the “Chain of Mystery “bike. Sadly, it also includes Larrys’ tribute bike as well as the urn, which is his final resting place. The latest, and perhaps final complete bike project, is Tough Customs’ “Pan Fryed”, which features a more traditional scroll style of engraving.

The current project that he is focused on is to pass on the knowledge that he has acquired, and the style that he created, through a

partnership with one of the most accomplished engravers in the world, at his prestigious school. The Ray Cover School of Fine Art Engraving will now feature a motorcycle and hot rod curriculum, to be taught by the man, himself, “CJ”. To put this in perspective, it is like being offered the chance to learn pin striping, with Von Dutch as the instructor!

Students will learn engraving from A to Z in this class. They will be taught how to set up their work area, prepare the piece that is to be engraved, choose, obtain and transfer patterns, make and sharpen gravers, and all the little tricks that CJ has learned, and developed, in his lifetime that make his work “pop”.

The last two days of the class are devoted to bench time, with hands on instruction. During this period the student will create pieces of their own work, with CJs guidance. Each student will be provided with projects to work on during this phase of the class.

I, personally, guarantee that the chance to meet, and get to know CJ, is worth the price of the class (which I intend to take), and the opportunity to learn what he has developed through a lifetime of trial and error, is priceless.
