Combo bulino / inlay (advanced), May 19 - 23, 2008 ($1500)

Requirements for this class:  Competent sharpening skills, good tool control.  (If you're not sure, just email Ray some pictures of recent work, and he'll give you his suggestion for which level of class you should take) 

     This class will include....

  • gold inlay techniques
  • bulino engraving techniques
  • combining inlay and bulino for engraving images
 

Basic Engraving:  July 14 - 18, 2008

 In this class, we teach......

  • bench set-up and equipment
  • sharpening tools most used for general engraving
  • scroll anatomy and design
  • general cutting techniques
  • script engraving
  • general background treatments
  • cutting common scrollwork patterns
New Class - Motor Cycle Engraving with C.J. Allan: August 4 - 8, 2008 ($1000)

In this class you will be learn.....

  • Set-up of work area

  • Preparation of area to be engraved

  • choosing, obtaining and transferring patterns

  • making, sharpening and use of gravers

  • little tricks from CJ that make his work ""pop""

For more individualized instruction, classes are limited to 5 students

 

Basic Engraving:  September 22 - 26, 2008

Motor Cycle Engraving with C.J. Allan: October 6 - 10, 2008 ($1000)

Intermediate Engraving:  November 10 - 14, 2008

   Intermediate Engraving:   ($1200)

     This class is highly individualized to take students from where they are to a more refined level and answer specific needs and questions.  Students in this class should already be able to sharpen a square and a flat graver, design and cut basic scrollwork, and have a good level of tool control.  (If you're not sure, just email Ray some pictures of recent work, and he'll give you his suggestion for which level of class you should take) 

Topics covered will include....

  • gold line inlay
  • gold sheet inlay
  • more advanced scroll designs
  • refining cutting techniques and individual skills

Advanced Inlay - Advanced Level: 

     This class deals with metal inlays beyond the foundational wire and sheet inlay methods.  Students must be capable of the basic and intermediate skills listed above to take this class.  Some of the things covered in this class are....

  • multiple metal color inlays
  • inlaying metals other than gold
  • inlaying into gold
  • raised inlay with an introduction to sculpting raised inlays
  • twisted wire inlay (Jim Small's "mokume" inlay method)
